Final Project Proposal

In portraits generally the focus is on the eyes. The eyes are referred to as windows to the soul, but what is the soul? The dictionary defines the soul as the spiritual or immaterial part of a human being regarded as immortal, a persons moral or emotional nature or sense of identity. For this project I am going to take a series of close eyed portraits and ask the models to describe their souls. Rather than allowing us to "see their souls" in their eyes they will have them closed as in a way of looking at or examining their own soul. I want to work with black and white images, or have the colors very muted. I plan to have a lot of these images - 10+ and will print them smaller than 8x10. I am undecided on how I will display their photo and description. I am also unsure of the lighting or angle I want to shoot from.

Assignment #1 The Art of Arrangement

Artist Statement

I began this assignment wanting to explore the idea of things that we buy and expect to offer us one thing and often produce something else all together. I first explored this within the idea of relationships and the significance behind the things we buy for other people such as jewelry for a girlfriend or wife. These types of gifts should be an expression of what’s already present in a relationship, not something to make up for what’s lacking. This provided good practice working with lighting, but I decided to explore the concept further and look at the things that we as humans purchase expecting them to provide us with some sort of “life” or benefit, things we often come to rely on and instead of giving life they take it away as instead of owning these things they begin to own us. I chose to remove all substance and text from the containers of these things to represent how they are really empty promises. I chose to photograph them lined up as if in a display case ready for purchase. These objects also fit the theme vanitas that was typically represented in still life paintings the 17^th century, these often depict objects that reference death. Still life’s are also often used as a way to practice techniques and this is reflected in the arrangement of my second image. I arranged them in a balanced composition that allowed me to practice lighting techniques in a studio setting without any other distractions.
